Matale District Chamber of Commerce of Commerce Industry was established on 24th October 2001 with only 16 founder members and 02 Staff Members at a s mall room provided by the President Mr.Nihal Weeraratne at his Hotel, namely “Clover Grange” there was no financing for the organization, but from October 2001 to April 2002, Matale Regional Economic Advancement Project (REAP) provided financial assistance until a permanent CEO was recruited in 2002. The Chamber was thereafter funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) and also by the FCCISL on Agreements signed. GTZ too introduced a project named Enterprise Services System Promotion (ESSP) with which micro & Small scale Entrepreneur were made to join as Chamber members and activities were organized to provide services according to their needs to promote their Businesses and Industries, with the result, Chamber was able to increase the number of members and the staff, while earning income for the Chamber sustainability. Present total membership is 160 including 155 individual members, 03 corporate members and 02 associations.

Chamber has able to resolve several key issues faced by the business community through its lobbying & policy advocacy imitative. One of the successful lobbying imitative of the chamber was to safeguard the interest of the business community in the Matale town when the Road Development Authority launched a project to widen the A9 road. The successful lobbying effort made by the chamber in safeguarding the interest of business community has been recognized in the FCCISL chamber competition by adjudicating this as second runner up in competition.
